Lay hold on eternal life,: what does it mean? It is how to live in the new life that we have in Christ; the life received when we believed on Christ for it, John 6:47. Eternal life is the very life of God, 1 Corinthians 6:19. Lay hold on the word of God by reading it, studying it and obeying it. Lay hold on the prospects of the fruits of this life.  The challenge is that we are to strive to receive the crown held out to us.  Strive with the same – should be a greater desire – purpose of mind and body that you would to accomplish an earthly prize, reward, game, trophy. 1 Cor 9:24-25 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.

His admonition is to take hold of the gift of eternal life that has been given you in Christ. Eternal life has many benefits:  it means we have the indwelling Holy Spirit, the presence of our LORD, His promise of help in all of life. You have weapons with which to fight the good fight of faith.  You have every reason to believe God. His word give faith, Heb 6:18-19 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; He answers our prayers: Hebrews 4:15-16.

If you are to lay hold on eternal life, it means you must lay hold on Christ.  It is established by the word of God that eternal life is Christ, Colossians 1:27 “….Christ in you the hope of glory.”

You lay hold on Him (by faith) to have eternal life, John 17:3.  Eternal life is received by believing on Christ for that, John 6:47

You lay hold on Him by walking in Him Colossians 2:6-10

You lay hold on Him by seeking things above; where He is, Colossians 3:1-4 Christ is our life!

You lay hold on Him by remembering He is the source of your power, Ephesians 3:20, Philippians 4:13. You can do all thing in Christ that strengthened you.  You can’t jump over a building through Christ, You can’t rob a bank through Christ, You can’t hate your spouse through Christ but you can do the things that strengthen you through Christ. Such as tithe and give, teach a class, lead a soul to Christ, be faithful, attend church, be honest and diligent in your job, etc.

The word strive means to agonize: Luke 13:24 Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able

If you gain the world and miss heaven your life is a failure. Our first matter of business is to receive eternal life. In this we are to be diligent, active and in earnest. The gift of salvation is not through overcoming our sinful nature.  Eternal life is only received by believing God, Rom 4:24-5:1 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

However, the admonition is pursue until you know, John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. 1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true , and we are in him that is true ,

The Promise He Promised PDF Print E-mail

God so loved you (John 3:16) that He came in the person of His Son (Jesus) to be our Saviour.   The birth of Christ is the body that the Father prepared, Hebrews 10:5.  A body that is the God man, God in flesh as us, without sin/sin nature: He was born of a virgin Luke 1:30-35 ( He bypassed man – the sin nature Romans 5:12).  He who was perfect as God remained perfect as the God man and said on the cross It is finished. As the perfect Lamb of God (God in human flesh) He died on the cross as our spiritual substitute bearing our sins in His own body, 2 Cor, 5:21.  God the Father accepted His sacrifice:  He raised Him from the dead, Romans 1:4.

He has promised you eternal life by believing on Him. 1 John 2:25; John 6:47. To believe is  to be convinced that all that God said is true. To be convinced that God hath saved you in Christ and that He alone can give you eternal life, 1 John 5:10-12 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.

And this is the record , that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

You can never save yourself through good works, self effort, rituals or by any means.  You cannot qualify yourself for eternal life.  And when you know that it comes from believing in Christ alone you then receive eternal life and it can never be lost

Being Certain in an Uncertain World PDF Print E-mail

Philippians 3: 8-10 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ , And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

In the time between Christmas and New Years we wrap up the old year, or clean up from Christmas, and get prepared for the New Year.   It is always a challenging time and this year an even more of a challenge with our government’s intrusions into our lives.  More and more we are finding our government is the problem.   Almost daily now we are finding our freedom of choice and our right to privacy is more and more limited.   The rule of law is diminishing from our nation and there is a spirit of lawlessness that is on the rise.   From the White House to homeless there is this idea “I do what is right in my own eyes”.  Even our President changes the rules according to what is right in his own eyes without respect to the governing body (congress) that makes laws.

There was a time that we all felt secure in our nation and the three (3) branches of government that operated as a check and balance to preserve our freedom.  But what we see today is each branch of our government controlled by their own ideas and agendas.  We have become a nation that makes changes to suit our politics: discounting our constitution, our heritage, our history and more importantly the Word of God.

So we are concluding 2013 with uncertainty in establishments that we once considered unchangeable and as time waits for none of us, may we look only to the LORD, may we lay hold on that which is certain. The choices before us are between: Tradition vs. The Word of God (Col. 2:8); Self vs. Sacrifice (Luke 15:27-33), the seen vs. the unseen (2 Cor. 4:18).

Eternal Life is certain, 1 Tim 6:19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life. A portion of our text says, “That I may win Christ”.  He is not one among many:  He is the Living God, the Saviour, the Creator, the Redeemer, and the Coming King. The following quote from “Clarke” sums it up very well: I have made a voluntary choice of Christ, his cross, his poverty, and his reproach; and for these I have freely sacrificed all I had from the world, and all I could expect from it.

What is Eternal Life?  It is a life that has no beginning and it has no end.  For one to process eternal life it must be something given.  It is certainly something we cannot create within us.  God is eternal; the God Head is eternal; Christ the God Man is eternal, therefore, eternal life is the life of the Eternal One.

Eternal Life was promised before the World began, Titus 1:2 In hope of eternal life , which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; Before the world began , before the creation, the gift of eternal life  was promised before there was anyone to whom it could be promised.  Which means God had a divine purpose for you way back then,  2 Tim 1:9-10  Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began ,  But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

So we see that eternal life is the life of God promised to us before the world began and brought to pass in the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Eternal Life is the very life of God, Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Christ in you the hope of glory Col 1:27-28 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory : Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:

To be saved means you have very God Himself living within you,  2 Cor. 6:19-20.  Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. He was promised by Christ as the “Comforter” means: one just like me. He is our Christ until we are with our Christ.  John 14:16-18 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter , that he may abide with you forever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

The word comforter in John 14:16 and the word advocate in 1 John 2:1 are the same word.  You have Christ living in you and you have Christ at the Father’s right hand as your advocate.

The gospel is not a story of how God will save you if you do this or that or if you have enough faith or the right kind of faith, or if you pray and ask god to save you and then don’t do anything real bad or you do whatever…..

The gospel is the story of the things God has already done for you in Christ:

He gave you Christ, John 3:16

He included you in Christ work on the cross, 1 Cor. 1:30

He put your sin on Christ, 2 Cor. 5:19-21

He accepted Christ’s payment for your sin, Romans 1:4 (He raised Him from the dead)

He has given you sufficient faith to believe.  It is not bucket loads of faith, or wheelbarrows loads of faith; it is not heart faith or head faith.  It comes down to this: do you believe what God has said about His Son?

Here is a promise from His Word 1 John 2:25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.

Here is the very promise of Christ John 6:47 Verily,  verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

The Bethlehem Story PDF Print E-mail
Written by Pastor

Luke 2:1-15

Micah 4:8

How did the Shepherd know where to go?  There must have been many stables and manager in Bethlehem.  But yet as you read this story they seem to know exactly where to go.

Micah 4:8.  The tower of the Flock was a place where all lambs were born.  They did not go from place to place they went to the place where all new born lambs were borne.  A new born lamb was wrapped in strips of clothing, swaddling clothes.  That is where they found Christ wrapped in swaddling clothes in a manager.

1. They came with haste” 2:16.  The angels did not come to elders, to the religious people

He came to the lowly shepherds, to the most unlikely people.  He was rich but for our sakes he became poor 2 Cor. 8:9. If he came for the lowest he came for all. He did not have to come but He did= that is grace Ephesians 3:1-4 Mystery = “A truth once hidden” He came for all.   The message of Christmas is Luke 2:10.  If you have a Saviour.

He was born outside the establishment:  Jesus Christ did not come to save a certain class, or group, or race, He came to all people John 4:42 shows that the Samaritans believed in Him.  He did come for the entire world.  He answers to no one.  He is the LORD.

2. The significance of His Coming Since the day that sin first entered the world, man has waited for the coming of The Promised Saviour.  Genesis 3:15. Now this moment has come The Saviour has come Matthew 1: 21. In all the years no one was able to remove sin and the stain of sin.

1. Sin stains – It leaves its mark on you – There for the memory to recall.  It stains your memory and your conscience.

2. Sin robs – It robs of peace and then bleeds you for the debt    it promises great reward and then leaves you broken and without hope.

No one has ever been able to remove sin and set man free from sin and its consequences until this night John 1:29.  No one could ever say – John 14:6 until this night.

3.   His Incarnation:  Luke 1:26-38. This is a marvelous trust in the face of natural law.  As betrothed she was already in law the wife of one of the Royal Line.  In other words to break the commitment would require a writhing of divorcement. This miracle, even though it is the incarnation of God, was going to create pain and embarrassment for Mary and Joseph.  To serve Christ, to be obedient to Him requires a sacrifice.   This scene and what took place is almost as remarkable as the event itself

1. It is remarkable in its announcement. Luke 1:26

2. It is remarkable in its teaching:  The Lord observes life. Luke 1:26&27.

He knew she was a virgin!  Does morality matter?  Do your choices in life matter?

It is teaching a law of honor.  You honor the Lord and He will honor you. 1 Samuel 2:30.  There should be a code of conduct in your life to the Lord as your creator and Redeemer.  There should be a code of conduct in your life toward your family.  Your code of conduct comes from the Lord and is developed by obedience to the Lord through His Word.  Mary had a code of honor as revealed by Luke 1:27. Our code of honor is destroyed by sin.  The great thing is that Christ can restore your code of honor!

4.  Mary Believed GodLuke 1:38.   Her salvation was not in her being chosen to be the Mother of Christ.  The

Salvation of Mary was in the fact she believed God. She declared Him to be her Saviour.  Luke 1:46-47.  If you read her song in 46 – 56 you will see her knowledge of the prochecies, the Word of God.  It was faith in Christ that Enabled Mary to call Him “My Saviour”

Though He is the Saviour of the World not all people are saved.  Many refuse to trust Him, other try to saved themselves while others do not see the danger they are in by not being saved – they do not see the danger of hell.

You are saved only if you can say “My Saviour”

5.   Conclusion: Is Christ your Saviour?  It is either yes or no?  There is no room for any other answer!

He is your Saviour when you believe Him, Romans 4:24&25.

If you will trust Him now He will be not only a Saviour born in Bethlehem and the Saviour of many others He wil Be your Saviour

Receiving Christ For Eternal Life PDF Print E-mail
Written by Pastor
Sunday, 17 November 2013 17:34

There is no doubt we are saved to live productive lives during our time here on earth.  Every believer is expected to be a disciple of Christ.  But being a disciple of Christ is not how you receive eternal life.

The Only condition of eternal salvation is faith in Christ, John 20:31, But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. John 6:47 Verily, verily , I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.  John 3:18, He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already , because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life . John 11:26 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: There are many more verses than these which says you are saved by faith in Christ.  The only condition that you must meet is to believe on Christ for eternal life.  There are no other conditions.  God is trust worthy just one verse from His Word is sufficient, however I listed above is five verses that say eternal life is received by believing on Christ for eternal life.

Faith is being convinced something is true. When you believe something to be true; you trust the One who made the promise.  Sarah believe she was going to have a son because God said so.  And Abraham did also, Hebrews 11:11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.  Romans 4:21, And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. Faith is a conviction that something is true.    Do you believe what God hath said about His Son?  Do you believe what God has promised you?  “And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life”

What is saving faith?  Saving faith is not a special faith.  Saving faith believes God for a specific thing:  saving faith believes on  Christ for everlasting life.  It is the object of faith that makes it saving faith. Listen to Jesus as He speaks with Martha, John 11:23-27  Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.  Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.  Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:  And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?  She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. When she said, “I believe thou art the Christ that should come into the World” she was saying you are the One from the Father who is the Saviour.  Christ means anointed one, the Messiah.  Remember in John 4:35 the woman at the well said, I know that Messiah coming and Jesus said, John 4:26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he. Martha said I believe thou art the Christ (The Messiah, The Anointed One) the Son of God that should come into the world:  that is saving faith.

Saving faith is to believe  God in what He said about His Son,   Rom 4:24-25 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;  Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. That is saving faith.

Many people think they are saved because they forward in some meeting and gave Jesus their life, believing in Him for something other than eternal life.  H e will help us with all the issues of life but that has to do with our discipleship, obedience to Him, our study and practice of the Word of God.  The promise of the Gospel  is not always what people are expecting.  He does not guarantee you a happy marriage, financial freedom,   a life without disappointment, freedom from depression, etc.  There are promises in the Word of God concerning these things and many more.  These issues are dealt with in discipleship but they are not the message of the gospel.

Being saved does not erase all your problems it only guarantees  you eternal life

What is saving faith: it is faith in Christ. Rom 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

When the Church Age Ends PDF Print E-mail
Written by Pastor

Matthew 24:3-7,  1 Thess. 4:13-18

Text verses 16-18

1 Thess 4:16-18 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:  Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.  Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

“What is the sign of thy coming and the end of the world?” These two questions covers a long period of time: from the time of the questions until the end of the world and His coming. And they do not happen exactly at the same time. Within this expanse of time many events take place, two of which are the rapture of the church and the tribulation. In our LORD’s answer He took the disciples up to the Kingdom Age. In our study of prophecy we will deal with the other events but now we are concerned when our age ends , the rapture of the church.

When the rapture comes the saved of the church age go to the judgment seat of Christ ( a part of the first resurrection).  As we study prophecy and we come to the end of the age we need to see what takes place.  Of course we understand that the signing  of the peace treaty and then the Tribulation starts here on earth but let us see what happens to the Body of Christ.

At the Judgment Seat of Christ: We stand before the LORD.

The absence of Rewards is serious, Rev 16:15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk nake , and they see his shame.

Rev 3:17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked

We will study the Judgment Seat of Christ in depth later in this study  but for now these two verses allow us to see the seriousness of this time!  Until HE become important  enough that you recognize Him in your life; until His Word become important  that you study The Word;  until eternity become real enough to you that you practice what the Word says: there will be shame at the Judgment Seat of Christ.

He is speaking about the material used in building, 1 Corinthians 3:1-15,

3:1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.

2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.

3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?

5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man?

6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.

8 Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.

9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.

10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation , and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.

11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;

13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.

14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.

15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

Their immaturity is seen in their jealousy, 3-5.  He uses farming to show their material would not stand the test, 6-8.

The second example is building, 10

He is talking about people who are trying to build the church with material that is not suitable.  This includes Preachers, leaders, Christians.  He is not speaking about someone who made a profession of faith in their youth and then wasted their life in sin but people who have the wrong material.

Who are you living for:  Col. 3:23-25  And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;  Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance : for ye serve the Lord Christ.  But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.

If the material is not right: attitude, motive, who are you doing it for, our faithfulness – all those things are examined by Christ: Our thoughts and our intentions,  Hebrews 4:12-13 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.  Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

Our Words will be Judged,  Matt 12:36-37  But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment .  For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

1 Peter 1: 7-8 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:  Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:

Trials are given that you might learn how to rule and reign with Him. They are given that you might learn how to suffer with Christ or for Him successfully,  Heb 10:34-35 For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance. Cast not away therefore your confidence , which hath great recompence of reward. The trials in life are to be viewed as precious and are viewed by the LORD so take courage and remain loyal and faithful through them.

It is important that you know that you will receive a reward – That is a motivation to be victorious and to recognize the purpose of the trial.

There is a reward for faithful service.  And God does judge His people here on earth even though they are forgiven and justified,

Acts 5:1-11

1 But a certain man named Ananias , with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,

2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.

3 But Peter said, Ananias , why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?

4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.

6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.

7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.

8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.

9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.

10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.

11 And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.

But the greatest problem facing the church is found in the Parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-30

There is no personal investment of God given talents with the LORD.

There are differences of opinion between scholars on the meaning of this parable.  Some believe this last servant is a lost person;  while others believe him to be a saved person at the judgment seat of Christ with no rewards.  The point being:  a person like this unprofitable servant is facing a great loss!

Have you invested your talent that He has given you?
