Suffering from Bad Habits

"Suffering From Bad Manners"

December 31, 2017

Pastor Roger Redmond

Act_13:18  And about the time of forty years suffered he their manners in the wilderness. Eze_11:12  And ye shall know that I am the LORD: for ye have not walked in my statutes, neither executed my judgments, but have done after the manners of the heathen that are round about you. 1Co_15:33  Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.

Evil communications refers to more than conversation: "The word rendered “communications” means, properly, a being together; companionship; close contact; converse. It refers not to discourse only, but to contact, or companionship." Taken from Barnes e sword study 1 Cor. 15:33

In other words if you keep company with wrong or people who know not Christ, you will soon be as they are.  You can suffer in life because of your own doings, as an evil doer,  1Pe 4:15  But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters. Suffering in this manner has no future.  Israel as a nation allowed evil communications to corrupt good manners.  Remembers the twelve spies?  Ten brought an evil report and two believed God: and they did not enter the Promised Land for forty years. Why?  They were influenced by the evil report!

It is good manners to always believe God, to walk by faith, to honor Him by you decisions, to separate yourself from those who have not faith.  It is rather foolish to suffer as an evildoer, for the pleasures of this life, which will only last for a few years ; instead of suffering for Christ for His blessing that will last for all eternity.

Pro 9:13  A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing. Pro 9:14  For she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city, Pro 9:15  To call passengers who go right on their ways: Pro 9:16  Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him, Pro 9:17  Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant. Pro 9:18  But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

I remember the words of a beautiful song: "Altar of Prayer"  The last verse says, "If you heart is weighed down with problems and you are caught in sins wicked snare" - "you can find peace and rest in your Saviour just meet at an Altar of Prayer". satan desires to sift you and deceive you but Christ came to you at the Cross: meet Him there.

Israel's Bad Manners

For forty years the LORD suffered their manners.  He put up with their rude behavior toward Him.  Consider some of their behavior and let us ask our self this question: is ours any better?

  • · They doubted the ability of the Lord.
  • · When testing came they blamed God.
  • · They spoke of the past as being good.
  • · They murmured and complained.
  • · They question Moses' leadership.
  • · They never left their idols worship.
  • · They wanted meat to eat
  • · They questioned the Lord.

Psalm 95: 8 Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness: Psa 95:9  When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work. Psa 95:10  Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways: Psa 95:11  Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest. For a detailed description of their manners read Psalm78:5-70. i.e. 78:17  And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness Psa 78:18  And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust. Psa 78:19  Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?. But yet the LORD remembered they were but flesh.  Psa 78:72  So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.

Not all rejected the LORD some believed The LORD:  like Joshua and Caleb but the other ten (10) gave a negative report,  Numbers 13:30-32.  As the Scriptures say, 1Co_15:33  Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. The people followed the unbelief of the ten.  It is good manners to believe God.

Even after the Resurrection of Christ Stephen stood in Acts chapter 6 & 7 and rehearsed to them the history of their rejection and rebellion to the Lord, i.e. Act 7:51  Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. Act 7:52  Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers: Act 7:53  Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it. Act 7:54  When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth. Act 7:55  But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, Act 7:56  And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. Act 7:57  Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord, Act 7:58  And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul. Act 7:59  And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. Act 7:60  And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

With Israel Rejection of Christ as their King, God called Paul and Revealed to him the Gospel of Grace

Paul is a chosen vessel, Act 9:15  But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel: Act 9:16  For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake. Paul is sent to the Gentiles, Acts 25:14-18,

Paul preaches the mystery that is now revealed, Romans 16:25-26. The mystery is this:  the death,  burial and resurrection of Christ - He indwells any who believe on Him. Col 1:26  Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: Col 1:27  To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

Paul certifies the gospel he preaches, Gal.1:11-12. But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. Who gave him this gospel?  Answer the ascended LORD.

Paul defines the gospel of grace, 1 Cor. 15:1-4. e.g. 3&4 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Paul was to preach the unsearchable riches of Christ, Eph.  3: 8. Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;

Paul was to preach that all men might see, Eph 3:9  And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

We are not Israel - We are the Body of Christ, the Church, the Bride - We are living in The dispensation of the Grace of the Grace of God,

Eph 3:2  If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward: This age was hid from all the Old Testament Prophets.  And for over two thousand years this age of grace has existed between the ascension and His return to rule in His Kingdom. Go to Acts 1:6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? The kingdom of which they asked is the 1,000 year reign or the Kingdom Age when He comes back to earth. From the time they ask of Christ  till He comes again,  There is a gap of over two thousand years: which is this age of grace we are now living.

Romans 15:8-13,  e.g. 15:8 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

Two things I want you to have:

1. Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing. You must believe the gospel to get in Christ.  In Christ you have access to the riches of His grace Romans 5:2.

What is the gospel that came to us through Paul, 1 Cor. 15:3-4 = The death burial and resurrection of Christ. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;  And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

2.  through the power of the Holy Ghost. When you believe you are sealed by the Holy Spirit, Eph. 1:12-13. - Ephesians 3:20. His power is his gift to us.  Be filled with the Spirit is to be filled with His power.  You have all of Him when He sealed you.  Luk_24:49  And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

You need to tarry with Christ until you are filled with His power, Eph. 3:20. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,Col_2:6  As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
