Rich Through His Poverty

"Made Rich Through His Poverty"

December 24, 2017

Luke 2: 7-20

Pastor Roger Redmond

2Co_8:9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

".....though he was rich ....." He was never rich in earthly goods; at no time did He lay aside wealth here on earth after He possessed it.

A.  He was rich in His preexistence because He became poor He had been rich.  See Phil. 2:6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: Php 2:7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: Php 2:8  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

B.  He was rich as the Creator, Col 1:16  For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: As the creator, He has ownership of all the gold, silver, diamonds - yea all that the worlds possess. Psa_50:10  For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.

".....yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich."

1. He was poor in His Birth.  It was a settled conviction that Jesus was to be born in Bethlehem and equally He would be revealed from Migdal Eder. Mic 4:8  And thou, O tower of the flock, the strong hold of the daughter of Zion, unto thee shall it come, even the first dominion; the kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem.

This watch tower was not the one for the ordinary flocks which pastured on the hills and valleys around Bethlehem.  This Migdal Eder lay close to the city and the flocks which pastured here were destined for the Temple Sacrifice.  And the shepherds who watch them were not ordinary shepherds.  Because of their duties, of watching these sheep, they were isolated from religious ordinances and therefore were looked down upon by religious leaders. Keep in mind they were out year around (24/7) and there on the winter night the Shepherds watched the sheep bound for the temple sacrifice.

It is said that all sacrificial lambs were born in the same place and that all were wrapped in swaddling clothes as to protect the limbs and give stability as they moved.  After all they were to be without blemish.  So these shepherds knew exactly where to go and there they found the Virgin - Mother,  a lowly carpenter and the Babe laid in a manager wrapped in swaddling clothes.  Luke 2: 16-20.

Who is this Babe?

He is God clothed in human form.  The Babe in the manager is the incarnation of God, Mat 1:23  Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. This form He took He will have forever.  Zec. 12:10  And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. Zec 13:6  And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends. This speaking of a time yet to come when the Jews will look upon the Christ .  In the 1000 year reign yet to come and there He will still have the wounds of Calvary.

He is the image of the invisible God, Heb. 1:3  Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Col 1:15  Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

He is the fulness of the Godhead bodily, Col 2:9  For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

" The word means, “having a bodily appearance, instead of existing or appearing in a spiritual form;” and the fair sense of the phrase is, that the fullness of the divine nature became incarnate, and was indwelling in the body of the Redeemer"

He is the One who bare our sins in his own body, 1Pe_2:24  Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

Christ is the Son of God, He is Deity.  Very God Himself,  Hebrews 1:3, Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Look what He did:  ".....when he had by himself purged our sins....." Therefore, you should understand that if God Himself saved you by His death, burial and resurrection then you indeed have Eternal Life.

In every dispensation, man is saved by believing God.  I think in every instance faith was imputed to them for righteousness, Go to Romans 4:13-23. What is counted for righteousness? Answer :Faith

Now look at verse 24-5:1 Rom 4:24  But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; Rom 4:25  Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. Rom 5:1  Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

What do you have in verse 24-25?  You have the death burial and resurrection of Christ. Now look at Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

What did God promise Abraham? See Romans 4:19-22  And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb: Rom 4:20  He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; Rom 4:21  And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. Rom 4:22  And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. God promised Abraham a son and Abraham believed God and his faith was counted for righteousness.  God has promised us Eternal Life through the death, burial and resurrection of Christ and if you believe that -  your faith is counted for righteousness, Read again Romans 4:23- 5:1. "Faith" plus Nothing.

2.  He was Poor in His death, He died alone for you and me! Mat_27:46  And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? He was at that moment carrying our sin.  The Father had laid on Him our sin, 2Co 5:21  For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. See Isaiah 53:4,5.  Christ was stricken, smitten of God and afflicted! Why? Because of the sin He was carrying but as you see later in 53:6 it was not His sin but our sin! He did no sin! Isa 53:6  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

3.  He was poor in His burial, buried in a borrowed tomb. Mat 27:59  And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, Mat 27:60  And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

He was rich in His resurrection, Romans 1:4. And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: He ran the race and finished the course. Paid the debt of sin, Heb 9:12  Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

Who is this Babe? He is the Resurrected Saviour: Our ascended LORD

2Co_8:9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich. But yet not many are living in the Riches of Christ.  They are living in hopelessness, despair, defeat; living without purpose.

Two words  want to leave with you today about Christ: Unspeakable and Unsearchable.

2Co_9:15  Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift. If you took the greatest writers and orators of all time, and if they used every descriptive words know to the tongue man, and they spent their entire life describing the gift of God, it is still beyond description.  Christ is indescribable. How can one explain what He did on the cross?

Eph 3:8  Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; see Ephesians 3:16-20.

This is the gift of grace to you through the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. Christ came to you.  Live in the power of your Saviour, Php 3:9  And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: Php 3:10  That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

Quit living in the Old Testament and live in the Grace of God.  Quit living in legalism trying to be perfect.  You are in His body, His bride, He is coming for you!

Eph 4:1  I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, Eph 4:2  With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Walk worthy your vocation , your calling.  What is your calling?  It is where you find yourself today.

For you to fail of the grace of God you have to turn your back on Christ and walk away from Him. Ephesians 5:1-21,

Psa 147:3  He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds. Psa 147:4  He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names. He can heal your broken heart !
