"Joy and Restoration"

October 8, 2017

Pastor Roger Redmond

Hosea 1:11, Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of the land: for great shall be the day of Jezreel.

Hosea is one of the Minor Prophets.  He was a contemporary, at the same time, of Amos, Isaiah, and Micah.  Minor Prophets are called minor because their writing is not as long as the Majors Prophets.   It has nothing to do with content.  Their message is just as major as any writing.

The Message of Hosea

Israel is the wife of Jehovah and they committed Spiritual Adultery by bringing in others gods, which are not another, God's Word to Israel or any person is Isa_45:22  Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.

Go to Exodus 19:3-6. The very first commandment  Exodus 20:1 -5 deals with the worship of God.  Someone said that all our sin can be traced back to breaking the first commandment.

There is only one way to deal with sin!  It must be confessed.  You must take the place of a sinner.  Psalm 51:1-4. That is the message throughout God's Word.  You cannot pervert the Word of God, which is a message found in the Book of Hosea,  and know where you stand with the LORD.

Some things to remember as we study

A.  Israel knew what God said but that did not impact their life.  The same is true with the Body of Christ today.  We know what God has said, but other doctrine is brought in our thinking.

B.  The Church is not found in the Old Testament.  Even though know by God before the foundation of the world.  Titus 1:2, 2 Timothy  1:9.

C.  Today is the Church Age but it will end with the rapture.  The Church is the wife of Christ.

D.  Israel is the called the wife of God.

There is a true worship and a false worship, Isaiah 58:1-3

58:1 "Cry aloud" lift up a loud voice, be heard. Preachers are to lift up their voice.

Isa 58:2  Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God.

  • · They were a people of a double standard. They honored the LORD with their lips but their heart was far from Him, Isa_29:13  Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: Mark 7:6
  • · They worshiped the Lord for personal gain.  they wanted the LORD to notice their good and for Him to reward them Isa 58:3  Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge...."  .  See Malachi 3:13,Your words have been stout against me, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee? Mal 3:14  Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the LORD of hosts .
  • · But look here:  Every time He pronounces judgment, gives a warning (and keep in mind this is done to bring His people back) He give them a way to Him, Mal 3:16  Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name. Mal 3:17  And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. Mal 3:18  Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.

There is always Chastisement, Judgment because of sin but there is always " Joy and Restoration" for any one who returns to the LORD.

The condition of Israel in Hosea is parallel to the condition in the Church today,  2 Timothy 3:1-5

Go with me to  Gal. 1:7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. go back to verse 6  for a moment.

The word "pervert" means "to render useless the Word of God".  By bringing something in along side of the gospel/ the Word of God and then it becomes adulterated.  (Illustration of a blender.)  You can put many things into a blender and after they are blended you can't separate the ingredients.  The Word of God stands alone as the sole authority and revelation of God.  When you adulterate the Word of God, when you pervert what God said,  you have no: "thus says the LORD," everything is blended together.

This is illustrated for us here in Hosea.

1:2   When the Word of the LORD came to Hosea and told him to take a wife of whoredoms, God was talking about spiritual adultery , "The beginning of the word of the LORD by Hosea. And the LORD said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the LORD. " He was not telling him to go to the house of prostitution and get a wife!

The key is found in verse 1:1 The word of the LORD that came unto Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel. What do you have is the question you must ask?  Answer: the nation of Israel is two kingdoms, a divided nation.  The Northern Kingdom (10 tribes) most of the time is Israel.  The Southern Kingdom is Judah  (two tribes).  That sum is the twelve tribes of Jacob.

What was Hosea told to do by God?

Hosea was to go to the Northern Kingdom, called Israel, to get a wife.  She (Gomer) had been taking part in adulterous worship with the 10 tribes called Israel here. The Nation of Israel is called the wife of God, Jer. 3:8 And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also. Jer. 3:14,  Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion: Isa 54:5, Jer. 3:8.  That holds true all the way through prophecy.  The wife of Jehovah is the entire nation of Israel she is not the Bride of Christ,

Rev. 19:7. The bride of Christ becomes the wife of Christ after the judgment seat of Christ. See Rev. 21: 9.

They had committed Spiritual Adultery against God and that is why he had to take a wife from the Northern kingdom.

He is showing their exceeding sinfulness:

  • · Of turning away from Him,
  • · Of perverting the Word of God,
  • · Of the sure judgment to follow.

He is showing His exceeding faithfulness:

  • · In the Joy and Restoration found by turning back to Him
  • · Faithfulness to His Word - Faithfulness to His people.  Go to Duet 30:1ff.  That is about 1500 hundred years before Christ and the world has been witnessing the that promise being completed and still taking place now.  When the Soviet Union fell apart millions of Jew fled to the land of present day Israel.  That is the Power of God's Word and the faithfulness of God.
  • · Do you allow the power of God to work in your life? Eph 3:20  Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Do you believe that God is faithful? Lam 3:22  It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. Lam 3:23  They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

What was their sin? 2 Kings 17: 7-12;16-20

2Ki 17:9  And the children of Israel did secretly those things that were not right against the LORD their God, and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.

Perverting the Word of God is always done in high places.  As the leadership goes so goes a nation. The leadership of a Nation, a home , etc. Jer. 7:18-19. Jer. 44: 15-18. Do you not see a parallel with America and the Church.  Go to Ephesians 5:22ff.

1:4, A son that speaks of judgment, "Jezreel" (1) it was the place where Jehu was swept to power over all Israel on a mighty tide of bloodshed (2 Kgs 9:21–28, 30–37; 10:1–10), here called graphically the blood of Jezreel (the Heb. word is plural and should be translated ‘bloodshed’; cf. Gen. 4:10–11; Hab. 2:8, 17); (2) it was the locale chosen—by the principle of lex talionis, where the punishment is portioned out appropriately to crime for the execution of judgment (Heb. for punish is pqd, literally ‘visit’ which may have the positive meaning of ‘look after’, ‘care for’ as in Ps. 8:4 or the negative meaning ‘punish’ or ‘avenge’ as here; cf. 2:13; 4:9, 14; 8:13; 9:9; 12:2). The location of Jezreel in a valley-plain between the mountains of Samaria and Galilee, and its close proximity to the valley of Megiddo, mark it as one of the prominent battle sites in Palestine, one of the few places where chariotry, cavalry and marching armies could be manoeuvred (cf. Gideon’s defeat of the Midianites there, Judg. 6:33); it was the appropriate place for the bow of Israel, i.e. Israel’s foolish dependence on military might (cf. 14:4), to be broken. Bow was the most accurate and wide-ranging weapon of antiquity.Hubbard, D. A. (1989). Hosea: An Introduction and Commentary (Vol. 24, pp. 68–69). Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press.

Jehu had hypocritical zeal!    "there, where he drave furiously, to avenge, as he alleged, on the house of Ahab, the innocent blood which Ahab had shed in Jezreel, Hosea foretells that the kingdom of Israel should be broken In the same plain, at the battle with Shalmaneser, near Betharbel (see the note at Hos_10:14), Hosea lived to see his prophecy fulfilled. The strength of the kingdom was there finally broken; the sufferings there endured were one last warning before the capture of Samaria 1:5

You remember what happened at Jezreel?  2 Kings 9:21-28 ; verses 30-37 and 10:1-10.  So if Jehu did the Word of the LORD, why did the LORD say, "....I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and will cause to cease the kingdom of the house of Israel." Answer:  You can follow the letter of the law and miss the Spirit of Christ.  Rom_8:35  Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

Don't let trials, persecutions, or suffering wrongs make you hard.  Look at Jude 1:20  But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, Jud 1:21  Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. Don't live in self justification and don't get past the tenderness of loving Christ and feeling His approval. 2Co_5:14  For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: Eph_3:19  And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

You must break the Alabaster Box.  Remember the message on the "Breaking the Alabaster Box":  It is an act of service done unto Christ and it is the treasure you have within.  We like life all neatly wrapped but it is not like that.  Illustration of the two pots.  Until the box is broken there is no fragrance.  When you break the box for Christ you are cover with the sweet smell of love unto him and that is an eternal blessing.

Hos 1:6  And she conceived again, and bare a daughter. And God said unto him, Call her name Loruhamah: for I will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel; but I will utterly take them away.

Lo ruhamah means not beloved. all forgiveness withdrawn. 1:7 But I will have mercy on the house of Judah,.... The two tribes of Judah and Benjamin, which retained the true worship of God among them; see Hos_11:12 and though they often sinned against the Lord, he showed them mercy, and spared them longer than the ten tribes; and though he suffered them to be carried captive into Babylon, he returned them again after seventy years: this is mentioned as an aggravation of the punishment of Israel, that Judah was spared, when they were not; and to show that God will have a people to seek and serve him, and, when he rejects some, he will make a reserve of others: and will save them by the Lord their God; by his own arm and power, and not theirs, or any creature's; nor by any warlike means or instruments whatever, as follows: from Gill on e sword.

Hos 1:9  Then said God, Call his name Loammi: for ye are not my people, and I will not be your God. Though called Loammi, and rejected from being the people of God; yet there is a time when their number, according to the promise made to Abraham, shall be as the sand of the sea, and the stars of heaven; which, as the one cannot be measured.

They behaved as if they did not belong to God.  Remember They were called the "Wife of Jehovah".

Why is God so particular about His Word?

He put it above His name, Psalm 138:1-3.

He gave His Word to us.  Without His Word there is no way for people to be forgiven.  When a person or church or group pervert the Word of God they have taken away their hope for Eternal Life.  That was the end result of the sin of Solomon.  He took away the LORD out of their life by bringing in idols. 1 Kings 11:1-3; 9-11

Next message :We will see their sin and look at the fortified cities of idolatries that the church faces and our marriage to Christ.
