"But For Sinners He Came"

December 11, 2016

Sunday A.M.

Matthew 1:23

"Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us."

Isaiah 7:14  "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel."

His name is called Emmanuel but He never bore the name as an actual name. It is giving meaning to verse 21, "And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." It is sin which separates us from God’s presence.  Emmanuel refers to Jesus' person as well as His work:  Jesus is Himself God with us!

Life is not about the perfection that we bring to it but life is about  believing God in the midst of the imperfections that life brings to us.  We live in a sin cursed world, a fallen world.  As a result of sin, life is full of deficiencies, blemishes, shortcoming.  Every life is touched by the stain of sin and that is why God in the person of Jesus came into our world and redeemed us.  John 3:18. It is important to note the word  believeth, believed.  Paul said, "......I know  whom I have believed....." Paul was saying my faith is in Christ. "...... for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.   2 Tim 1:12

What does it mean to be fully persuaded?  . "...... for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day."

  • · You will never need to make haste , Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste. Isaiah 28:16. The specific thought here is that of a man on whose house the storms hit, and who takes in the notion that the foundation is insecure, and leaves it to seek a more safe position. In other words, there is no need to be afraid.  There is no need to run to every wind of doctrine. Make haste is to be afraid.  Isa. 32:17 "And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever." Here is what JESUS (Who is Emmanuel, "God with us) said  "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

  • · You will never be ashamed that you trusted Him" Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded."1 Peter 2:6. " Confounded" carries the meaning of made to blush.  You will never be sorry you trusted Him.  Humans can betray you but HE will never deceive you.  That why Paul could say, "...... for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day."

Matthew's record of the Genealogy of Christ is a record of the Grace of God for sinners.  The story of salvation is woven in this pedigree of Christ from the promise to His birth.  It was unheard of for a woman to be in a Jewish Genealogy but for two of them to be gentile women by birth  cannot be explained, other than God's Grace .  Then when you consider that three (3) of these women had a blot on their life and one was excluded by the law you see the unsearchable riches of Christ. Luk_5:32  "I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

Tamar (same as Thamar) .  Her story is found in Genesis 39:21-30.  You could say she got in because she was a sinner. She committed Adultery with her father-in law

Rachab, (same as Rahab). Her story is found in Joshua Chapter two (2).  You could say she got in by faith. Joshua 2:9. And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.

Jos 2:10  For we have heard how the LORD..."

"We have also explained to us the nature of faith. Rahab did not know what the word "faith" meant, but the thing itself was in her heart, and it found expression..."  copied from e sword from sbc.

She received  the message.  This is a most remarkable story of one who heard and believed. She took the place of a sinner.  The scarlet thread represent her faith and that she was a sinner.

Ruth, Mat 1:5  "And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;" Her story is found in the Book of Ruth.  You could say, she got in because of grace.  There was a law that shut her out.  Deu_23:3  "An Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to their tenth generation shall they not enter into the congregation of the LORD for ever:"

Bathsheba, the mother of Solomon, was the woman whom David took from Uriah, her husband, You could say she got in because of the certainty of God's Word. He kept His promise to David.  God's Word is Sure.  The Lineage had to go through David and Abraham for Christ to sit throne as the KING.  Rev. 22:16.    I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. God's promise to David,  2 Samuel 7:13 He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.

You are included in this story of salvation.  Christ is the foundation laid by God, ".....Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;" The way of Salvation was chosen by God,  ".... disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, Mankind does not allow for Christ in the their thinking or decisions but He is chosen by God.  For God so loved that He gave... " For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Emmanuel refers to Jesus' person as well as His work:  Jesus is Himself God with us!  God offers you Eternal life in the person of Jesus Christ!  Paul said, "...... for I know whom I have believed....." Will you believe Him?

Isa 26:3  "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee."
