1 Peter 2:1-5

1Pe 2:5  Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Salvation is not a prayer we pray or a commitment we make but a Person that you believe on for everlasting life, John 6:47, Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. For believing on Him, Christ guarantees you Eternal Life.

On Wednesday Night to show , that salvation is believing on a person for everlasting life;  we looked at the personal pronouns in Isaiah 53.  There are approx. 50 personal pronouns referring to Christ note (KJV).  Of all the personal pronouns  only one is feminine ,  Isaiah 53: 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. Some translation will preempt you from doing a word study by making the change according to their opinion.  I prefer to do my own word study because of the promise of the Holy Spirit, John 16:13 "...., he will guide you into all truth:....." and another reason I prefer the KJV.

Ewes, female sheep, are the most submissive.  The ram, male sheep: "While sheep are generally a docile, non-aggressive animal, this is not usually the case with rams, especially during the breeding season. Rams can be very aggressive and have been known to cause serious injuries, even death, to people. A ram should never be trusted, even if it is friendly or was raised as a pet. It is important to always know where the ram is and to never turn your back on him. Children should be restricted access to rams during the breeding season". taken  http://www.followyourdreamfarm.net/sheep-behavio

and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. Christ willingly submitted Himself to the cross, Phil. 2:6-8 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:  But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. That is why the word "her" is important in Isaiah 53:7.

Other interesting facts about sheep:
"Sheep have a strong instinct to follow the sheep in front of them. When one sheep decides to go somewhere, the rest of the flock usually follows, even if it is not a good "decision." For example, sheep will follow each other to slaughter. If one sheep jumps over a cliff, the others are likely to follow. Even from birth, lambs are conditioned to follow the older members of the flock. This instinct is "hard-wired" into sheep. It's not something they "think" about."

" Sheep tracks are never straight. The winding of trails allows sheep to observe their backside first with one eye, then the other. Sheep can spot dogs or other perceived forms of danger from 1,200 to 1,500 yards away." Taken from www.followyourdreamfarm.net/sheep-behavio

Once saved then what? That basic question goes unanswered in most conversation.  Questions swirling  around in the mind:  How do I grow? How do I mature? How do I grow closer and more intimate in my relationship with God?  What is  spirituality ? How can I be more Christ-like?   Praise the LORD there is an answer!  And the answer is in the Word of God. Php 2:5  Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

We are to walk in Him and to follow Him and to be like Him. Col 2:6  As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: View life from heaven! Follow His thinking!  In studying the Bible, which is the mind of Christ you will find the answers to your questions and live life to the fullest,. 1Pe_2:5  Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

1. It is in studying the word of God  you grow, 1Pe 2:2  As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

2. It is the transforming of the mind that you know what is acceptable to the LORD, Romans 12:1-2,  Eph_5:10  Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.

3. It is in following Christ that brings maturity,  Hebrews 5:11-14, i.e. 14  But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Christianity is not a dead theology, we serve a Living God, A living Saviour, Heb_10:31  It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God., Rev_7:2  And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea,

Elijah mocked the prophets of Baal about their god being powerless, empty, worthless, 1Ki 18:27  And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.  You may not worship Baal but you have idols, things, that you put before the LORD, which amounts to the same thing.  Those things are dead, powerless and in them you have no future!

When Israel returned to the LORD from their backsliding in Hosea chapter 14 they said, "...neither will we say any more to the works of our hands,  Ye are our gods: for in the fatherless findeth mercy."

Hosea 14:1-4, O Israel, return unto the LORD thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity.

Hos 14:2  Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips. (our words, praise, confession will be YOU)

Hos 14:3  Asshur shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses: neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, Ye are our gods: for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy. (They will not return to their previous way)

Hos 14:4  I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.

Faith that worketh by Love | Print |  E-mail

He is worthy of our suffering, our sacrifice and our obedience. Unless you learn to love Him, there will never be the motivation to serve Him  in an acceptable manner.  Faith please Him, Heb 11:6  But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Faith that worketh by love, Gal 5:6  For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.

The song " The Longer I serve Him"

Chorus
The longer serve Him, the sweeter He grows,
The more that I love Him, more love He bestows;
Each day is like heaven, my heart overflows,
The longer I serve Him, the sweeter He grows.

Ev'ry need He is supplying,
Plenteous grace He bestows;
Ev'ry day my way gets brighter,
The longer I serve Him,
The sweeter He grows.

To him that believeth He is precious, I Peter 1:7That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:  1Pe 1:8  Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: 1Pe_2:7  Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

In believing you must remember it is a person that you believed on, Joh 6:47  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. Therefore, it is not a creed, a way of life, a theory but a person.  Scripture points to a person, John 1:11He came unto his own, and his own received him not.  Joh 1:12  But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Many are the scriptures may I list a couple, Isaiah 53:1-12 approx. 50 personal pronouns in that chapter alone.  And in Isaiah 9:6 We find He is very God Himself "....the Every lasting Father..." We find the Father made Him (Christ) a body, Hebrews 10:5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: That body came into the world by the way of the virginal conception, The Virgin Birth.  Luke 1:30-35, i.e.35  And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall over shadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

In that body is the incarnation of God, Jesus Christ the God Man, 100% God and 100% man.  Hence,  He is called also, the Son of Man.   And as the Son of God/ The Son of Man and in that union,  He went to the cross as a person and suffered as a man would suffer.  He tasted death for every person that every person would have a Saviour.  (Review Isaiah 53 )

It is not a supernatural love: it is your love for Him, John 21:15-23. Your love's foundation is from a supernatural act,  John 3: 5-8. That took place when you believed God.  Listen to the Word of God about the New Birth, John 3:9-18. So let us summarize:  We are to believe the record that God gave of His Son, Romans 4:24-5:1, 1 John 5:11, we are to believe on Him for everlasting life, John 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. Just think the greatest authority you have to rest you faith in Christ is the Word of God!.

Our love for Christ is a personal love. To be a disciple of Christ requires a personal love for Christ. The use of phileo in Peter's answers and the Lord's third question, conveys the thought of cherishing the Object above all else, (from Vine's Expository Dictionary use of phileo (from Vine's Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words, Copyright © 1985, Thomas Nelson Publishers.)

Personal love is expressed and found when you take up your cross and follow Him, Luke 9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

It is through the study of God's Word that we grow and walk in Christ, 1 Peter 2:2, Col. 2:6, Col. 3:1-4, 2 Tim. 2:15. It is through the Word of God that we develop our life as given in 2 Peter 1: 3-10 . Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.  For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

The Choice: Discipleship or Wasted life" | Print |  E-mail

Which will it be

“thou good and faithful servant”

or

“thou wicked and slothful servant”

May 8, 2016

Underneath the pressure of our daily life is the lingering unanswered question: what is the purpose of my existence.  Why am I here?  In moments of quite reflection,  of why do I exist, what is the purpose of me being here, what hope do I have,  these question and many more run through our mind.

The answer to all these questions are found in the Word of God.  In it you find the promises of God about eternal life, how to receive eternal life, faith, what to do with my life, how do I follow Christ, is there something for me to do, what to do after I sin, how do I get back in fellowship, will God give me another chance, etc.

If you are not sure, you have eternal life continue in this study;  the way of salvation is given throughout.  Also, if you are seeking the LORD, He will be found of you: “if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.” You can know the truth.

If it were possible to know, I believe more people have come to believe on Christ for eternal life in studying God’s Word than in  evangelist services. How to be saved: Believe on the LORD Jesus Christ as your Saviour, John 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

We are born into a sin cursed world. A world that is against God, against right, against truth and the end is death without God.  It is also a world into whom the Love of God has come, John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Jesus is come to seek and to save that which is lost.  In order to escape this world, you must be born again, John 3:1-6, i.e. v.6  That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit (that which is done by the Holy Spirit when you believe on Christ to be saved).

I believe as for the Body of Christ, we understand that part. You have fled for refuge to Christ, you have believed on Him for everlasting life and I think it is here that our purpose gets lost.  Why did God leave me here?  What is the purpose of my existence?  2 Peter 1:2-4 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

It is abundantly clear that the answer is in God's Word.... Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature. Partaking of the divine nature that is in you, 1 John 3:9. He indwells and you at the moment of believing on Him for everlasting life, Ephesians 1:12-14.  That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.  In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,  Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

Is there any question to the understanding the divine nature is dwelling in us, Joh_14:17  Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it  seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 1 Cor. 6:19-20  What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?  For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

Over the years I believe we have developed a fairy tale Christianity one that requires no suffering, sacrifice and obedience.

We have made little of discipleship!  Acts of service has become nothing more than living in the fruits of the Spirit and ignoring the fruit we are to bear, John 15:ff. Jesus told His disciples to lift up their eyes and see the fields that are white already to harvest and in doing so He laid the work for us to do.  He in essence joined the disciples with His work, John 4:24-36 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.

Until we value the recompense of the reward.  Understand as Moses did “…respect unto the recompense of the reward”. Or Paul who said,Php 3:8  Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, You will never experience your purpose in the here and now!  If you put, recompense of the reward, in our words;  it means that the LORD will pay you back for the sacrifice and suffering you did for Him.  Even in John 4:36, He said, . And he that reapeth receiveth wages.

Psalm 37:4   Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

What are the desires of your heart? Have more? Lust more? Spend more or maybe you don’t know what you want!  Never satisfied, Never content, 1 Timothy 6:1-7. One should certainly pray about their needs and the demands of life.  We do have the promise of God, Phil. 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Does God bless us in this life? Yes ! Mar_10:30  But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life

The desires of our heart are to be in the focus of discipleship.  Christ is worthy of our love, Gal_5:6  For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.   1 Peter 1:7-9 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls. That is the question He asked Peter, John 21:15-18. Do you love me?

Three times Peter denied Him and three times Peter affirmed he loved Christ. 1.  Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest thatI love thee. Christ  brought Peter back to Matthew 26:33. You see the tenderness of Christ for He never asks him again about:  more than these.

The first and second time Christ used a different word for love than Peter,

2.  Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee.

Christ to Peter: agapao_me________

Peter to Christ:_ phileo___you_____________________

Christ to Peter: agapao_me________

Peter to Christ:_ phileo___you_____________________

The third time Christ comes down to the love that Peter was using: .  3. Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee.

Christ to Peter:___Phileo__me Peter to Christ:_Phileo__you___________________

What is the difference in these two words of love. The word Peter used refers to a personal love such as used in John 11:36 to describe Jesus love for Lazarus, Behold how he loved him!

The word agapao is used for divine love such as the law required, Luke 10:27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.  Phileo is never used in a command for men to love God.  It is used in a warning as found in 1 Cor. 16:22 for not loving Christ.

Three times Christ affirmed to Peter his mission:

21:15 “Feed my lambs” To give that which provides nourishment:  The Word of God, 1 Peter 2:2  As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow therebyThere is no doubt but that Peter understood this, 1Pe 5:2  Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;

21:16 “Feed my sheep” To tend, to give care as a shepherd

21:17 “ Feed my sheep” little sheep a term of endearment as found  in 1 John 2:1   My little children , these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:  John 21:17

He is worthy of our suffering, 2 Timothy 2:11-13.

1. “For If we be dead with him” “For” the fact is so that, “if we be dead with Him (the Greek aorist tense implies a state once for all entered into in past times at the moment of regeneration, copied from JFB e sword

2. V. 12  “If we suffer, we shall also reign with hin…” A key word is “also” To reign with Him in eternity, we must suffer with Him in our life now = Discipleship!  “…if we deny him he also will deny us: Deny us in the aspect of reigning with Him.  We are denied by our lack of works of discipleship.  It will be a fair hearing at the Judgment Seat of Christ; one will be denied by the lack of works, 1 Cor. 3:12-15.  The saddest thing is in that we disappoint our Saviour

3. V.13 If we believe not, : It is important that we keep n context to whom He is speaking.  He is speaking to the saved.  It is unbelief – if we believe not – for one not to follow Christ in discipleship is to refuse the Word of God,  Heb 12:25  See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven: The LORD in these words “refuse not” is allowing you to see the meaning of hearing: = receiving (not rejecting), believing (as resting on), hearing as from the LORD (as taking to heart – my attention).

4. yet he abideth faithful : he cannot deny himself. Be careful that you do not go the wrong way.  He is not going to ignore your failure to use your life; it will be to give every man according to his work. He cannot go against His Word or His character.  Just as His word is true in rewards to the faithful so will He be faithful in the matter of one’s loss of rewards.

“Of these things put them in remembrance” You note the words “put them in remembrance”: Paul was instructing Timothy, as a Pastor and to all Pastors, to remind the church of the previous stated things, 2 Timothy 2:11-13 . Not a new truth but something already known. A truth evidently not obeyed but known. Paul told Agrippa the things of the LORD are not done in secret:   Act_26:26  For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner. Serving the LORD is not a new thing; it has been from the beginning. The knowledge of the LORD is written in the constitution of the universe and in us by our Creator!

“Charging them before the Lord” We often forget that everything is before the LORD. So in the matter of teaching and preaching God’s Word I am charging you before the LORD. I am setting forth unto you the case brought by the LORD. The Word of the LORD is so important unto you that it is brought as charge! These charges are before the LORD , “I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels…”1 Timothy 5:21. And the charge is made unto Pastors, “This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare; 1 Timothy 1:18.

The earnest appeal is about words that would overthrow the faith of some  These are not bad words but words that do not teach Christ as God intended. , Col_2:8  Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

“Words to no profit” It is called vain talking, 1 Tim. 1:6  From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling; Words that give no direction.  The bible tells us to have an answer for the hope, 1Pe_3:15  But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

What is the opposite of “words to no profit” Study the Word of God, 2Ti 2:15  Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Study the Word of God to know the way of eternal life. Religion will give you different ways and therefore you find uncertainty about how to be saved. There is only one way to have everlasting life: Joh 6:47  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. How could Jesus make such a claim? He would soon go to the cross to die as the Lamb of God and take away the sin of the world. No other person can make that claim for He is the Messiah, the Christ, The Son of God that did come into the World, but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. Heb.9:26. He guarantees you eternal life.

It is God’s expectation that we study to be approved by Him. Someday every knee will bow , Php 2:10  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;  2:11  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. This will be a free will confession! He will not force anyone to bow to Him or confess Him. Every saved person will stand at the Judgment Seat of Christ and every person will say He is fair,  “ It was a fair hearing”. Every person will know they received no rewards because they did not take up their cross and follow Him. Every lost person at the Great White Throne Judgment will say , it is right I did not believe on Him for eternal life.

The Bible  makes clear that the believer must give an account of his or her Christian life in the presence of Christ  Romans 14: 10-12)…

We must (I believe) at the time of the judgment seat have our eternal bodies. We will know and understand that the judgment is fair and our sin nature will not prevent our embracing and owning our sins. Also we will be able to know, understand better the embarrassment, sorrow and loss of a wasted life as we stand there.

Joh 6:47  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. Heb. 9:26b but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
