Matthew 1:1-23

Mat 1:18 " Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost." His birth happened in this manner , "was on this wise". This is not the beginning of the heavens and the earth but it is the genesis of deity clothed in human form, And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. Matthew 1:16.   " Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:" Hebrews 10:5. The virginal conception , Luke 1:27-35, i.e. "And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God."

This is the time of the year that we focus our attention on the Birth of Christ and we should come to a full understanding of the purpose of this Birth.  It is the incarnation of God as seen in Matthew 1:23, "Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us." Prophecy of this birth establishes that God is Christ and Christ is God; it establishes the deity of Christ, Isa 9:6 " For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

The account of the Birth of Christ is introduced by His lineage.  The purity of lineage is held in high esteem in the mind of the Jewish Nation.  An unbroken record of His pedigree to a Jew was necessary as given here in Matthew's account of His genealogy.

"These genealogical records were actually kept by the Sanhedrin. Herod the Great was always despised by the pure-blooded Jews because he was half-Edomite, and we can see the importance that even Herod attached to these genealogies from the fact that he had the official registers destroyed so that no one could prove a purer pedigree than his own. This may seem to us an uninteresting passage, but to a Jew, it would be a most impressive matter that the pedigree of Jesus could be traced back to Abraham."

Barclay, W. (2001). The Gospel of Matthew (Third Ed., p. 15). Edinburgh: Saint Andrew Press.

It is divinely arranged for memorization:" It is further to be noted that this pedigree is most carefully arranged. It is arranged in three groups of fourteen people each. It is in fact what is technically known as a mnemonic, that is to say a thing so arranged that it is easy to memorize. It is always to be remembered that the gospels were written hundreds of years before there was any such thing as a printed book. Very few people would be able to own actual copies of them; and so, if they wished to possess them, they would be compelled to memorize them. This pedigree, therefore, is arranged in such a way that it is easy to memorize. It is meant to prove that Jesus was the Son of David, and is so arranged as to make it easy for people to carry it in their memories."

Barclay, W. (2001). The Gospel of Matthew (Third Ed., p. 15). Edinburgh: Saint Andrew Press.

The genealogy is a historical fact that proves the lineage of Christ as prophesied.  When roads are built they have a route in mind, a link from the place of origin to a certain destination.  Along the way, many communities are linked to together.  In like manner the genealogy of Christ leads from the promise to the Incarnation, Mat 1:23  "Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us".

"God With Us"

The hopes, dreams and the well-being of all humanity is bound in the "unsearchable riches of Christ." Ephesians 3:8.   The truth of Christ can only find its beginning in God, John 3:16.  He is "God with us".

In the biblical account of creation, we find our creation, created in the image of God. Gen 1:26-27  "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." Therefore mankind is born to create.  Within each of us is found the dreams for our life.  We each were created for greatness and fellowship with the LORD.  Greater still is God's desire for us.  He gave us the ability to dream, plan and achieved.  It is His desire for us to be blessed.

We were Created by God for His Glory and Fellowship

G. K. Chesterton said, ‘whatever else is true of man, man is not what he was meant to be’. 1

But why are we not what God meant for us to be is the question.  And the answer is simple:  sin.  Sure we have the sin nature but we used our own free will to defy God.  We choose to find greatness and to achieved our dreams by our power and by our own means.  We choose to ignore His Word and ignore His Holy Spirit.  "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:" Romans 5:12. The problem is manifested when our search for power and greatness is apart from our Creator while looking for fulfillment outside the principles of His Word.  You cannot ignore God, His will or His purpose and be blessed.  You were created in His image and only He can meet your need.

Within the human race, you find needs of every sort.  The need to be loved, to be wanted.  The need to feel important.  The need to be secure.  The need to know you are complete.  That and all other needs are fulfilled in Christ.

The feeling of inferiority is the root cause of our unsavory action and the actions are a sin.  We can call them by whatever convenient name but they are still sins.  Sin is whatever is short of the glory of God, Romans3:23. But Christ makes you complete, Col_2:10  "And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:" It requires that you believe Him.

That is why He came into the World

Isaiah 9:6 ".... and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." He did not leave us when we lost our greatness and became a slave to sin, to heartache, to bitterness, or a slave to the circumstances beyond our control.  When our dreams, our life took a turn for the worst, He did not leave us to be destroyed as a result of living in a fallen world.

(1.)Barclay, W. (2001). The Gospel of Matthew (Third Ed., p. 16). Edinburgh: Saint Andrew Press.

If it were not for Him the story would end here.  But it doesn't end here.  the end is with Him. Mat 1:23  "Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us."

Isaiah 9:6 does not say,  His names shall be called but it does say, "....and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.  That means that He will today be to you whatever you are needing. He will not leave you in the downturn of life, without hope. He is in the same valley that you are in.

Take the name Counsellor:  ("The name “counselor” here, יועץ  yû‛ēts, denotes one of honorable rank; one who is suited to stand near princes and kings as their adviser....")  copied from Barnes from e-sword.

The greatest counseling you will ever receive comes from Him, John 16:33. He is suited to stand near us.

He came into the World to be our Saviour, to die in payment for our sins and for us. And He did that very thing. "My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world." 1Jn 2:1-22

Psa 16:7  "I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons."  "my reins" means the seat of emotion and thought - your mind.

Though He is the Counsellor as a man He received counsel from the Father and the spirit of counsel rest upon Him, Isa 11:2  And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;

We value our faith, our power, our ability, our mind, our plan and fail to cast our self upon Christ, 1 Peter 5:7. And how would you cast yourself on Him? By faith! By believing on Him for every need as it is given in the Word of God.

Psalm 7:9.    "Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins."

Bible Study 1 Timothy

One of the purposes of the Pastoral Epistles is to teach Christian living in response to the Gospel

1:1 Paul is the writer of this book and his authority is established in verse one. Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope; His commission is from the LORD, Acts 26:12 -19,  i.e. 26:18  To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

Lest you think that satan does not have power: read again verse 28 "...from the power of satan...." when you put that with the other scripture , 2 Cor. 4:3-4, But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. You see how needy, blind and helpless is our condition without the preaching of the gospel.

Paul is sent by God to the Gentiles to preach the message of Christ, 26:18  To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. God used Paul to write much of the N.T.  Therefore,  we should spend much time in reading Romans, 1&2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Colossians, Philippians, 1&2 Thessalonians , 1&2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Hebrews.  These books teach much about the church age, the age in which we are now living.  Teaching about the basic bible doctrine, the gospel, our service,  church administration, conduct, biblical answers to our questions.

Christ is our hope because He is the Gift of God, John 3:16 and Romans 6:23. The preaching and teaching of the Gospel of Christ that is God 's power, Romans 1:16 &17 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

We are forgiven because our sin was judged in Him,  Our sin was placed on Him, 2 Cor. 5:21, For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. Sin is not forgiven it is paid for by Christ in order that we be forgiven, Col. 2:13-14  And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;  Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

1:2  Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.  Evidently, Timothy had believed in Christ for eternal life and had become a follower of Christ in the preaching and teaching of the Gospel by Paul, Acts, 16:1 and 1 Cor.4:14-17.

It glorifies the Father to bear fruit for Christ, Joh 15:8  Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.  That fruit remains and no doubt that fruit is someone coming to Christ through you as a follower of Christ.

You should desire fruit for your life. I would want to say, in heaven , as I look around, here is fruit from my life: Joh 15:8  "..... that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples

1. Fruit because I believe on Christ, John 15:2  Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

2. Fruit because I took up my cross and followed Him, John 21:22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.

3. Fruit because I gave, Psalm 126:5 they that sow in tears shall reap in joy.

4. Fruit because I prayed, Psalm 126:6 He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.

5. Fruit because I presented my body a living sacrifice, Romans 12:1-2

6. Fruit because I gave someone the gospel of Christ, 1 Cor. 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

7. Fruit because I was faithful to Him! Gal_6:9  And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

As you look back over the passing of your life can you see fruit for your life?  I challenge you by the Word of God that you look to have fruit in the life you are now living, Gal. 2:20

1Ti 1:3  As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,

He was to remain as the overseer of the Church at Ephesians.  The Overseer of the Church is called angels in Revelation 1:20 The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

"That it cannot mean literally an angel, as referring to a heavenly being, for no one can suppose that such a being presided over these churches." copied from Barnes on e-sword.

We see from this book that God called  and commission Paul, who stated that he and Timothy shared the same common faith , my son Timothy in the faith (1:2). The Word plainly states that we stand in His stead, ambassadors for Him.  He gave Pastors to the Church and He placed you in the body of Christ. therefore stand for the gospel as given in the Word of God, bear fruit for Him.

The charge is " charge some that they teach no other doctrine, False teaching has always been a problem in the Church.  He compares false teaching to "fables" = fairy tales.  So the question would be how far can you go from the gospel message and still be saved?

"Christ Receives Sinful Man" | Print |  E-mail

Luke 15:1-7

Submission to God starts with the recognition of God's ownership and right to rule in our lives.  This recognition of our LORD is a created attribute within man.  In the creation, the man was given this ability; but it is there as a choice for us to make to love Him and obey Him above all else.

There is no doubt that man belongs to God through creation as well as by redemption.  When Adam and the woman disobeyed God and rejected His authority and rulership, Adam had not partaken of the fruit of the forbidden tree from the woman.  Therefore sin had not entered into the world, Romans 5:12.  Man was created with the ability to make a choice.  He was created perfect and in holiness. When he was faced with a choice to accept God's authority and rulership or to reject it , he rejected that authority and right.

Here is how he rejected the LORD: Let us consider the command, Gen 2:16-17  And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:  But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. ( Man would die spiritually and would then need redemption)

The first time the Hebrew word for commanded is used, Gen 2:16  And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: It deals first with what is permitted, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: In  17a comes what is not permitted, But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it:

When Adam was placed in the garden and given the command to eat of every tree except of this tree: (Gen 2:17  But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die., It appears that man was given the same opportunity that satan and the angels had at one time.  Would man make the same choice to reject God's right to rule over him?  Would man act independently  of God?

1. The woman listens to the serpent, Genesis 3:5-6 &13, rather than God's Word.  Before she had the sin nature.

2. Adam hearkens unto the voice of his wife rather than the voice of God, Genesis 3:17. He made the choice before he ate the fruit.

They rejected God's authority and right to rule over them!  They did not submit to God's divine order.

Angels had the same choice to accept or reject the authority and rulership of God.  Satan and one-third of the angels sinned; they rejected God's authority and right to rule over them.  The result a onetime fall of these angels that sinned.

The two-thirds that did not fall and have not fallen since.  Evidently, they no longer capable of choosing to sin.  This is why you do not have angels still falling as some did originally. Jude 1:6  And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

When Adam ate of the fruit he died spiritually and therefore spiritual death passed unto all.  Whereas came the gift of Christ, John 3:16, man is indebted to God in redemption as well as creation.  But yet man will reject the Authority of God, the Ownership of God and God's right of Rulership and choose his own way.

Consider why you are here and what you must do with Christ who is your Creator and Redeemer:

1.  You were created for His Pleasure, Rev 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.  When you look to the LORD, see Him as your Maker and your Saviour.  He owns us by creation and then purchased us back by Redemption which is in Christ Jesus!

Rom_8:39  Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1Ti_1:14  And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

2Ti_1:1  Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,

2Ti_1:13  Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

2Ti_2:10  Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

2Ti_3:15  And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

2.   Submission to Him is the choice only you can make.  He provided the way, the redemption, the completed worked. Joh 14:6  Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Submission is an act of faith! Submission is an act of love! Do you believe God? Do you love Him? People often say, "I love the LORD".  But if you have not submitted to the righteousness of God your zeal for God is not according to the Word, Romans 10:3-4. For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth. For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. You submit and or receive the Righteousness of God by believing on Christ for everlasting life, 2Co 5:21  For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

On the cross God put the sin of all on His Son Christ, 2Co 5:19  To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them..." So if our sin was not put on us where did God put them?  He (God )put them on His Son, "... and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:6. That is how God made His Son sin for us  "...for he hath made him to be sin for us. By this work, Christ has obtained eternal salvation for us, Heb 9:12  Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

Do you believe that Christ has obtained eternal salvation for you according to His Word?

By the authority of the Word of God you should know you are saved, 1Jn 5:11  And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

3.  Choose to do something for Him that will cost you something. Luk_12:43  Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. We live with only our thoughts for our self.  Forget yourself and do something for Christ and others.

A.  Choose to be faithful.  B. Teach a Sunday School Class.  C.  Become a Prayer Warrior (pray in secret).  D.  Be a Soul Winner  E.  Be a Greeter at the Services of the Church. F.  Be a Giver.  G.  Be faithful to all the Services. H.  Be filled with the Holy Spirit.

If you forget about yourself and do something for Christ you will find He is doing something for you.

Keeping The Doctrine of Salvation | Print |  E-mail

Bible Study 1 Timothy

7/6/2015, Wednesday Night

1Timothy 1:3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,

The word charge means to: transmit no other doctrine.  Remember Bible Doctrine is what God has to say about any subject.  The no other doctrine as mention "charge some that they teach no other doctrine," is the doctrine of salvation.

1 Timothy 1:4 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.

"godly edifying" means handling the Word of God as He has given it to us. “the dispensation of God,” the Gospel dispensation of God towards man (1Co_9:17) copied from JFB from e sword.

The Word of God is the word of faith. Hebrews 11:6, Romans 10:17, Roman 10:1-10.

False teaching has always been a problem in the Church.  He compares false teaching to "fables" = fairy tales.  Will you risk eternity on a fairy tale, on a fable, the deception of satan?

False Teaching is the work of satan.  It is the message of deception.  False teaching is promoted by satan.  Remember the commission of Paul, Acts 26:12 -19,  i.e. 26:18  To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

satan  power to blind,   2 Cor. 4:3-4, But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

Illustration :Testimony from one of our missionaries:  One lady said, "We don't know how to believe".

So how would you answer the lady?

You see in her statement the power of deception, the power of satan to blind the mind.

She does not yet understand  the Gospel of Christ. Salvation is an understanding,  1 John 5:20, And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. If the gospel is good news, and it is good news, then there is something done for us without anything from us.  Salvation that is ours totally and completely without the stain of human effort.

Because of blindness mankind has a misplaced faith.  The answer from a blinded mind is something like this:  "I am not in unbelief, I believe! I just don't know that I am saved."  Remember the Gospel of Christ is the record of how God saved you.  He is not asking you to believe He will save you! He is telling you He saved you in Christ at the cross. So your misplaced faith is in trying to know you are saved by believing He will save you. The message of salvation declares you saved because of Christ, 1 Cor. 1:30, 1 John 2:25, Hebrews 9:12. Believing in Christ for eternal life is understanding that God saved you in Christ. God is not asking you to believe anything other than His Gospel, which is what He did for you on the cross.

Consider with me Romans 6:23. in comparison with 1 John 5:10-13

The question is this, How do you know you have the Son? You can answer it from Roman 6:23.  You have the Son because God gave Him to you.  He is the Gift of God!
